Students will read James Baldwin's 'If Beale Street Could Talk'. The 1974 novel will be able to provide context for students of the historical Black experience in the United States, and can be used to draw cultural connections with the Black experience in 2022. Potential writing assignments can include George Floyd, reparations, Barack & Michelle Obama, Candace Owens, Kamala Harris, police & the black community, Lil Nas X, Tim Scott, being black & gay, Beyoncé, capital punishment - the list goes on. I once asked the students what they needed from me, and one replied "How to think critically in the modern world". I use books to try and help them sift through our very complex world, get their hands dirty and muck around with ideas and issues.
