Just because the students can't express their feelings in a way we understand, it doesn't mean that they aren't feeling it--help them understand and express it in a healthy way. By donating to our project, you will be the kind stranger who helps them get through a possibly tough day. Students remember kindness and it sticks with them. One approach that we have found helpful to keep our students engaged and to be able to learn about emotions is to ‘learn through play’ by playing a game. Research has shown that learning through play helps improve cognitive development, relationship building, and stay engaged. By having the teaching games in our classroom our students will be able to learn coping mechanisms for angry and anxious feelings, relaxation techniques, improve self-control, delaying gratification, self-talk, and problem-solving strategies in a fun and engaged way. Putty and ball exercises are taught to be tools to use when anxiety or anger arises and is a learned alternative to lashing out with physical behaviors. With students learning to express feelings in a more socially acceptable way they will experience more positive relationships with their peers.
