During the summer of 2021, our school piloted a reading buddy program that has demonstrated promise to help our newcomer students with their reading and English language acquisition skills. The program purposefully pairs our intermediate/advanced English learners with our newcomer students. The students read together at least twice a week for 20 minutes. We have used most of the donated picture books for our reading sections and our limited library does not contain engaging reading materials for our students. The students in the program have requested that we expand our reading library. This project will fund various graphic novels books and bilingual books that the students will continuously use during our reading sections. Our expanded selection will continue to enhance reading engagement and English language acquisition. This project supports the following Nevada ELD Standards: *Social and Instructional language: English language learners communicate for Social and Instructional purposes within the school setting *The language of Language Arts: English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Language Arts *The language of Mathematics: English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Mathematics *The language of Science: English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Science *The language of Social Studies: English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Social Studies
