In my class, students do not read a cookbook lab that tells them what to look for and how to look for it. Instead, students are given a researchable question that they then design experiments around. Many experiments revolve around testing the effectiveness of temperature on a variety of topics. Experiments this year have had to be reworked due to the lack of machinery able to produce a constant temperature for an extended period of time safely (no open flames). The temperature baths would allow for labs to be less restrictive and allow students to experiment as much as they want. The temperature baths are also important for the incubation of DNA samples, which we will be covering next semester. Students will be able to test their own DNA using the newly purchased equipment. This will hopefully increase student engagement as they will be identifying whether their DNA is oriented for them to be a morning or night person. It will open up many great conversations and great opportunities for arts integration!
