All students in my classroom have individualized goals they are working on in the following areas: social and emotional, including relationships with peers; cognitive and early academic, including communication; and self help and adaptive skills, including meeting their own needs. A goal and skill many students are working on is self-coping and self-regulation. In other words, way to calm our bodies when we have big feelings. (Easier said than done! For kids and grown-ups!) "Self-regulation is a foundational skill of early childhood. It's the seed we plant that allows children to grow into adults who can manage their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. If we give children strategies to stay calm in stressful situations, they develop strong habits that they can apply in the future." I am trying to create an environment that is naturally calming and inviting. We tend to not have our overhead lights on to reduce stimulation and create a more relaxing atmosphere. The lights here would help me create a more calm and serene room for my students. A way I am trying to teach my students self-regulation is by having, and offering, them a safe space. We currently have a cozy area in our classroom where kids can go when they need alone time or a space to calm down when feeling escalated. My classroom is a round shape, making it hard to create a secluded area that allows for alone time. The tent (blanket and pillows) would provide a safe and cozy space for my students to chill and practice those self-coping skills we work hard on every day.
