My general music students have really enjoyed learning about different musical cultures, and learning to compose music in an audio workstation. They have expressed to me many times their interest in learning to play instruments. I think all students, not just band students, should have the experience of learning an instrument. Learning an instrument teaches patience and discipline, as well as musical concepts like harmony, rhythm, and song form. It would also be a great opportunity to discuss the musical culture that the ukulele comes from, and how it has effected popular music all over the world.
