My goal for this project is to encourage my students to make a choice in the classroom. The seating options will give them a chance to make decisions when it comes to their learning environment by using either standing desks, floor cushions, and stools to give flexible seating opportunities. We all learn and feel comfortable in different ways. Students who have a choice when it comes to their comfort will learn more. They will be more engaged if they are comfortable.
I also want to give my students more experiences and options with different ways to work and learn together. I have selected games from Jenga, Mindful Task Cards, to magnetic building tiles to give students a chance to work together and also play. I want to use these as free choice options but also as hands-on center work. Many students are quick to only be engaged by technology, so by giving them a choice to participate in activities outside of the computer can both build relationships and problem solving skills. I have selected math focused games and manipulatives to add to engagement and build math resilience in the classroom as well.
I also incorporated some fidget packs to help both as incentives for students who are working hard on their learning and to be used as tools in the classroom. Fidgets when used as learning tools in the classroom gives students a chance to have some sensory output during lessons. Many students struggle staying focused and regulating their emotions in my classroom. The fidgets will give students a change to squish a stress ball when they are upset or fidget with a mesh marble to stay focused. My students now and students to come would greatly benefit from the chance to make choices in their learning environment and activities.
