I will utilize these novels for whole class and small group reading instruction. My lessons using these books will address all grade level reading skills that adhere to our Next Generation Reading Standards in my state such as comprehension, vocabulary and reading fluency. Engaging in "Book Talks" with classmates based on these chapter books in my classroom with also promote collaboration, critical thinking and communication skills which are vital to this generation of young learners. In addition, these books will also be used for independent reading at home for the students' requirements to complete a schoolwide reading log, and the children often do not have access to books at home to do so. I chose these particular novels because they are both fantasies and stretch my students' imaginations as they realize the pleasure of reading a book with that eager and suspenseful feeling of not wanting to put it down. As I have gotten to know my students well these past three months and read aloud to them every day, I realize that they enjoy fantasy books as they each have the ability to visualize the characters, settings and plots of the stories. They love to share their unique, vivid imaginations of what they see happening in a specific chapter. My students have shared with me that reading and discussing books that we have read together is one of their favorite parts of our day. I will continue to strive to build a solid foundation for my students to become lifelong readers by immersing them in well-written books through my use of quality literature as a basis of my literacy instruction.
