Some people might wonder the power of a small granola bar. But for my students, a granola bar can make or break a student's experience in my classroom and their day. A granola bar can determine whether my students will be ready to learn or will they be having headaches or low mood due to hunger. I have several instances where students cannot focus because they felt weak and tired because they don't have breakfast. Because of this, I have been routinely buying boxes of granola bars and leave them out for students to take should they need a quick snack. I don't ask why the students need a snack; I want my students to feel safe to get a bite to eat if they need to. Ever since I started having snack in the classroom, students have become more engaged and energetic during class. Some students would tell me that the granola bar is the only thing they had for the morning and they are grateful for it. With this project, I would be able to continue to provide quick and healthy snack for my students without having to sacrifice my own personal savings. High school students tend to get hungry quickly and I want to make sure I provide a place that fuels their body and their minds. I believe this is one of the most important steps in achieving educational equity, by giving students the nourishment to go through their learning day.
