Nevada Reading Standards 11-12.1, 11-12.2, 11-12.3, 11-12.5, 11-12.6, 11-12.9, 11-12.10, Nevada Writing Standard 11-12.9a The Skin of Our Teeth is a Pullitzer Prize-winning play that contains outrageous elements that engross teenagers while presenting thought-provoking dilemmas and concepts for students to reflect upon. Dinosaurs, a gambler and a beauty queen, famous philosophers--all parade across the stage over the drama's three acts. Characters must face the challenges of cataclysmic disasters, vice, betrayal, and other various evils, yet they always persevere--by the skin of their teeth-through forgiveness, mutual support, and personal growth. The themes are possibly even deeper than the entertainment. Despite its age, this play remains novel and unusual, thereby creating interest that will attract teenagers to its intense themes. The relationships developed between the play's characters especially reveal how humans must depend upon one another and act together to escape the worlds ills, their own faults, and unavoidable happenstance. During the COVID quarantine, I developed an opening Google gameboard that will lead students to gather information on the play's topics, allusions, and other content so they have background that will enrich their experience while reading this Avant garde drama. My study guides then focus students upon the play's details and central themes. They are designed to make students consider unfamiliar philosophies, as well as normal literary elements that create meaning.
