For the school year, my classes have an independent reading goal of 15 to 20 books in addition to their class reading. The objective is to improve comprehension and help students develop their vocabulary. Also, silent independent reading can improve fluency by allowing students regular time to practice reading. The books I've selected were suggestions made by students who have already read the book or would like to read them. By providing them with reading options that interest them, I feel the students will be more likely to achieve their reading goals by May and set them up for academic success across the curriculum. Independent reading improves comprehension and helps students develop their vocabulary. Also, silent independent reading can improve fluency by allowing students regular time to practice reading. The NVACS that reading corresponds are RL.9-10.1 through RL.9-10.10. Also the students will be doing two presentations in relation to their independent reading choices which correspond to SL.9-10.1-3. In addition, their vocabulary is enriched while reading which corresponds to NVACS L.9-10.1-8.
