In our 8th grade social studies classes, we will be creating an American Quilt history project. Every student will take one aspect from our history standards and create a square depicting that event, person, or idea for our class quilt. Our class quilts will be given to the Veteran's Hospital to inspire, thank, and uplift and others will be hung right here in our school to educate and inspire students and faculty. Students will be using their Disciplinary Skills S.6-8.EUSH.8. Construct organized explanations for various audiences and purposes using evidence and reasoning., S.6-8.EUSH.14. Interpret historical events from a variety of cultural perspectives, including but not limited to: Native Americans vs. settlers, Northerners vs. Southerners, and native citizens vs. immigrants, and other standards. It will be used to fill in gaps in standards for each individual student, based on their learning last year and this year. This is a great opportunity for our students to reengage with social studies in a hands-on way, while learning a valuable skill. The interest in our upcoming history class project has inspired us to begin an after-school sewing club, called Sew Kind, as our mission is to help people, all while learning how to sew. We plan to sew face masks for students and faculty, colorful pillowcases for kids in our local hospital, and small keepsakes for veterans and children in need. While giving back to our community, we will be creating a more unified community here at our school. I would love my students to have this experience as a way to make friends, connections to our school, and community. Students will learn a skill, persevere through problems that inevitably arise when sewing, and will take pride in learning while creating for others. The club will promote positive SEL skills.
