We are currently using book clubs to explore texts and discuss literature as a class. Students love the ability to read together, argue their viewpoints and connect these important stories to real life. The book Fatty Legs is our number one request as we jump into nonfiction texts. As we have been learning about Native Americans of the past and present this month, students are completely enamoured with the history of our country and want to hear the true story and experiences of Margaret-Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton. Her story of resistance resonates for so many of my students and they thrive off of both the truth of what happened to her but the opportunity to see her win.
