This equipment will help students carry out their own original long-term research projects. Too often, students just learn about the results of science or carry out one or two day "labs" where the results are already known. While that is a good starting point, it isn't how science really works, and it doesn't inspire students to go into science as a career. By researching a real problem, developing a clear researchable question, designing experiments to add to our knowledge about that question, and analyzing the results of those experiments, students get a real understanding of science as a process. One of the holes in our ability to do this is the fact that our wide-field stereomicroscopes date back to the opening of the school and are largely nonfunctional. Replacing them is a high priority and the students are looking forward to using them. Additionally, our Science Club members (who serve as mentors to students doing long term research) are preparing for the Science Olympiad Tournament. The events are increasingly technology-oriented and the supplies are more expensive. This project will also fund supplies needed for those technology and building events. The supplies and equipment will help our students gain authentic experience in research and science, and inspire our students to consider careers in STEM fields.
