English Grade 9-10 students: Comprehension and Collaboration 1. Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one- on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 9–10 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. In my class at Juvenile Court Schools, everyday we try to watch CNN 10 news and other video clips that would promote student’s high interests. Today one student asked me what $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill was. The other day another student shared his personal opinion on current immigration issues on the US / Mexico border. Last week, I shared a video clip that featured Denzel Washington’s motivational speech. He encouraged young people to “fall forward.” We had a short discussion afterwards. Some agreed and shared their ideas of making mistakes. In the end of this lesson, they all clapped their hands to show me they liked the lesson. I’m not a great teacher like the one in Freedom Writers. However, I believe all students have voices inside them. They just need opportunities to open up and express themselves. In my class, while watching meaningful videos/news, asking questions for clarification, and sharing and listening to each other’s opinions/ideas, my students often find themselves newly inspired and encouraged to do better at school and in life. For this reason, I would like to get one decent portable projector so I can take it from one unit to another unit to see different groups of students each day and every day. There are five units. I have old broken projectors sitting in each unit right now. Please help me help these students.
