Opening and operating a school-based business enterprise is important for this population because this will allow them to get first-hand applicable vocational experiences that they are unable to receive out in the community. They are unable to get this experience in the community due to their deficits in communication and social skills. These deficits make it difficult for my students to operate in unknown environments, in large groups, and work at a competitive speed. However, opening a school-based business enterprise would give them an experience that they are missing out on by allowing them to learn and practice these vocational skills in a setting that is equipped for their needs and where they can work at a pace that is tailored to them. During the operation of this school-based enterprise, they will learn and practice applicable vocational skills daily as they complete the tasks that are necessary to run the business enterprise. These tasks/skills include but are not limited to making the products, packing the products, filling orders, and managing money.
