The focus of this project will be coding with a purpose while introducing STEM careers through diverse worker examples. In this project students will make connections between real world examples of assistive robots and the similar coding activities we do in class. Daily a video will be shared from the IF/THEN collection. Allowing students to be introduced to diverse workers in a variety of STEM careers. The students will journal their own exit reflection on their own passions and interest and brainstorm how they could contribute to technology with a purpose that can make a difference. Students will create a culminating project of their own where they demonstrate passion through a robotic coding project. A specific daily project example would be to begin with reading an article, “Robot takes contact-free measurements of patients’ vital signs”. After a discussion of and what coding was involved. Next students will code our robot to walk/move to a specific destination with an object and do a task. Next, the IF/THEN collection Yamilée Toussant Beach video would be shared where she discussed how she incorporates her passion for dance into her interest in STEM. Lastly students will reflect through journaling their on their own passions and opportunities for making a difference. These reflections to select a final project topic. Pictures and videos of students presenting their final project will be taken and displayed along with the professionals already on display. The inspirational daily videos allow for reflections to help students see STEM roles and diversity. The photo collection will be used in print displays and include in course materials to highlight diverse representation in STEM. The goal is to increase enrollment by incorporating diversity into the course and recruitment by creating an atmosphere where students see all genders and ethnicity represented in STEM careers.
