Like most students around the country, my kids had an abnormal school schedule for Kindergarten due to COVID-19. At the beginning of their school year, they were only participating in Remote Learning for 4 hours daily. By October they had the opportunity to return to the classroom, but they were only receiving in-person instruction for half of the day before returning home for more remote learning opportunities. Our curriculum had to be adapted to fit our priority standards with our short instructional time period. Often the knowledge section of our daily routine that exposed students to nonfiction texts took a backseat in our lesson planning because of the emphasis on our phonology development. Most students had minimal nonfiction text exposure last year due to our half day instruction and curriculum adjustment. Further, most in-home libraries are full of fictional texts, so the students were not getting exposure to nonfiction texts at home either. Therefore, I am asking for more nonfiction texts to supplement the lack of exposure from last year's COVID-19 setback. I want to assist my students in the development of their meaning and context processors by supplying enriching nonfiction texts for them to use to build background knowledge. Some of the nonfiction texts I've requested correlate with our science curriculum and can enhance our science content as well. Using these nonfiction texts, I can assess standards 1.RI.1, 1.RI.2, 1.RI.3, 1.RI.4, 1.RI.5, 1.RI.6, 1.RI.7, 1.RI.8, 1.RI.9, 1.RI.10, 1.W.7, and 1.W.8. Hopefully with these additional texts, we'll be able to fill in gaps in understanding, build background knowledge, investigate strategies for analyzing nonfiction texts, and make up for the time that was lost due to COVID-19.
