Every day, I have students asking if it can be their turn to sit with our giant stuffed elephant. They lie on it while doing work, they hug it, and it makes them smile. They have requested more giant stuffed animals to enhance the warmth and comfort of our classroom. Data tells us that space matters for learning. Our classroom space is critically important to ensure students feel safe enough to take risks and build relationships, both of which enhance learning. While it may seem like an odd request for a high school classroom, my students are healing from (and still undergoing) collective and individual traumas including the pandemic, mental health challenges, the loss of classmates/friends/family to violence, and more. I am so proud of them for showing vulnerability and asking for what will help them to truly be at home in our classroom.
