The 3-D science materials and variety of informational science texts/encyclopedias listed on this project will allow children to explore the Montessori Science Curriculum while meeting a wide range of national NGSS standards. The variety of books listed on our project will help students develop their research, writing, and collaboration skills (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.2 and CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.7 and CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.3), read a variety of texts, and explore their interests in science, history, and culture. In Montessori pedagogy, we believe that math and language are the languages of science and culture and through understanding math and language we can better understand and explore the connections within our world that help all living things survive and thrive. Providing materials like scientific models and rich informational texts allows children to learn more about the world around them through hands experiences while practicing their math and literacy skills. Furthermore, through hands-on experiences and research texts children develop their own understanding of Montessori's Cosmic task (the role that humans and nonhuman beings have in the interdependence within and continuation of life within our universe).
Social-emotional learning is key to whole child development. Within Montessori pedagogy, social-emotional learning standards are embedded in the foundational elements of the curriculum. The model of the brain and the yoga cards will assist our 32 six to nine-year-old children in understanding how their brain works and building the mind-body connection, helping them to connect with themselves and others through respectful and mindful interactions and communications. The use of Yoga and understanding our brains directly connects with building skills in self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relational skills cited in the NV State Social Competencies. These skills are particularly important to nurture at all times, but especially in a time of crisis like a worldwide pandemic.
