If they don't know you care, they don't care what you know. Even before Covid, the world was not a kind place for my underserved students. Their challenges only grew as nations battled a pandemic that basically shut the down the world and locked people within the four walls of their home. For a community that lives paycheck-to-paycheck, this created an avalanche of mental health crises that is evident in our schools and in my classroom. Student engagement and energy is visibly diminished and the exhaustion of many of my students carrying the burden of their families' livelihood on their shoulders has resulted in a class of student too afraid to speak and to engage. The purpose of the hot chocolate stand is to show my students that we do care, that we are thinking of them beyond just their grades. It's not enough to just say it. We aim to show it. It's a small gesture but it's something I know will help loosen the tension in their shoulders, the exhaustion that often puts their heads on the table, and the cold that comes with winter's chill.
