So many of my students that receive speech therapy in school have no verbal communication. They are unable to ask for things they want or need, respond to questions, comment on something that happened to them or just say hi to their friends. Because they are so young, this may be the first time they have truly used any form of augmentative/alternative communication. We want to start with low tech materials, such as, pictures. If I have the ability to laminate these pictures, they will last longer and they can be used during their daily routines at school and carryover into their home. We want each child to be able to request "more snack", "red crayon", "bathroom/potty", etc... We also want them to tell us if something is "yucky", "yummy", "love" or if they're "happy", "sad", "angry", etc...
