My high school students love to read and analyze literature as a whole class or in small lit circles. Much of our book sets are outdated or have worn from many years of use. We are in a rural area and many of the students will never be exposed to other cultures even in our own country. Through literature, students will be able to learn and explore the stories set in other parts of the country and around the world. The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls is a memoir in which Jeanette reveals her perspective growing up poor in a transient family. She travels to various parts of the U.S. and shares her adversities through her memories of growing up with an alcoholic father. The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein is a creative and relatable story through the eyes of a dog. Many of my students have pets and farms and will be able to learn how to read and write from a different character's perspective though not human. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a multifaceted story of coming of age in Afghanistan during a time of war and strife. This novel will helps students to learn about a culture very unlike their own, yet understand a story of making mistakes as we grow up and trying to make right from our mistakes.
Giving my students the opportunity to grow with the characters of these novels and learn from their challenges and growth, will foster in their love of reading and help them to have a stronger grasp on analyzing elements of the stories. We get excited for their adventures into each novel!
