We are a charter school Garden Club wanting to teach students how to grow their own food in their own space, with the benefit of learning to grow sustainably in the harsh southwest desert. Our mission is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening in our students and local community through the creation of our first-ever, student-operated garden on campus. Our goal is to grow and cultivate a variety of foods and flowers by installing raised garden beds and working alongside the local organization, Garden Farms Foundation—the most comprehensive urban farming company cultivating residential, school, organizational and community gardens, a nonprofit wing, and Las Vegas' first local, online farmers market. The outcome of the garden will impact the school as a whole (1574 students and 150+ staff members) as well as the local community. K-12 students are allowed to join the after-school Garden Club (although it primarily consists of and is run by secondary 7-12 students). Research shows that there are social and therapeutic benefits of gardening (Page 2008). Working within a natural landscape can optimize individuals' mental health (an increasingly serious issue) and is associated with physical health and well-being (Shiue 2016; Sempik 2010). With well-being and mindfulness practices in the spotlight as of late (especially during the post-pandemic peak), our students, teachers, staff, families, and community will profit greatly both personally and academically considering the benefits of gardening.
