Imagine you walk into a coffee shop to enjoy a cup of coffee and a quiet place to get some work done. The first thing you do (after ordering your favorite caffeinated beverage of course) is pick a place to sit. You are given the option to choose the seat that is going to be most comfortable and beneficial to your ultimate goal of getting work done. Now imagine you are 12 or 13 and you walk into a classroom where you are expected to learn, but you have one seating option. This option is a stiff desk, much like the stiff desk you were sitting in during your last class and the stiff desk you will be sitting in for your next class. Although for some students the desk is in fact the most beneficial seat for learning, that is not true for everyone. I believe that students should be given the opportunity to sit in a seat that supports their individual learning style. There are multiple ways flexible seating can enhance learning in the classroom. First, when a student is comfortable, it is easier for them to pay attention, and in turn increase their learning. This is similar to providing students with breakfast and lunch. Much like we don’t want students to have an empty stomach, we should also be sure they are physically comfortable in their learning setting. Another benefit of flexible seating is that it teaches students responsibility and accountability. I have found that allowing my students to choose their seat requires them to make responsible decisions. Flexible seating also teaches students the responsibility of learning what works best for them.
