My classroom serves as a welcoming, diversified, safe space within our school community. Our school population is a culturally and linguistically diversified community in an East Oakland neighborhood. As a title one school, 95% of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. As the resource specialist my main job is to give interventions to my students with learning disabilities throughout the day. That includes making academic and behavior modifications. I have to differentiate the curriculum so that it is accessible to my students and they have the opportunity to participate academically in the classroom along with their grade level peers. As well as making behavioral modifications, like flexible seating, sensory input and positive social emotional learning to be able to cooperatively work with their peers.
