Learning to create a believable character onstage is a process that takes many levels of instruction. Our theater students practice reading and acting skills on a daily basis and act many plays in the classroom without set pieces or costumes. Being able to don the apparel of the character in a script makes such a difference in the attitude of the actor, and the ability to play a convincing role. We have chosen a play to learn that involves pirates and their roles as renegades throughout history. The donations to this project will help my students create believable characters onstage by allowing them to dress the part; it will improve their understanding of set design, costuming, and characterization in the performing arts. The costumes chosen represent various levels of social dress among the seamen. The captain is the best-dressed and wears a prominent hat; first mate is the next best-dressed, and the crew is in various aspects of class distinction by their shirts, pants, or whether or not they have sashes or head gear. My students already show an astonishing interest in creating believable characters. This project will help enrich their experiences in theater arts.
