Many of our students have always been in a state of struggle, as we serve a large percentage of the lowest socioeconomic population of students in our city. Unfortunately, COVID has destroyed many of the connections made with students that teachers work so hard for. The items that I am requesting will provide a space that reduces their anxieties and allows me to get back to working with them in a smaller space to ensure their success. My job as a special education teacher is to set my students up to be successful, and right now, that starts with their mental health. One objective that makes my students very anxious is: Write routinely over extended time frames and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences. The fidget toys, stress bands, and alternative seating will be used to allow my students with anxiety and ADHD to get their energy out and focus on the writing. The water fountain and color-changing light will help in calming my room from sensory overload. The tablet will be used to allow students mobility, by allowing them to step away from their computers. However, I'm most hopeful to receive the novel "Dear Evan Hansen." This particular novel discusses topics that will relate directly to my students, allowing them to not feel so alone.
