We currently use free articles from Newsela with questions that are teacher-generated and student-generated. We have one class set of textbooks Inside, Volume 1 with workbooks. The pandemic has forced us not to share items, so we take extra care in sanitizing textbooks and letting them sit for three days before the next class can use them due to Covid restrictions. We have to photocopy pages from the workbooks because there are not enough for all students and we’ve not been able to order more.
Students are required to “Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters or narrators in a text.” CCSS.ELA-Literacy RL.7.6 This novel is divided by characters, so students learn about characterization and perspective. Wonder is a novel that teaches social emotional learning (SEL). It inspired a nationwide movement to Choose Kind. Our students are just beginning SEL lessons twice a week. This novel, with its accompanying guides will teach my students the value of choosing kindness and identifying their own emotions.
With a class set, each student has their "own" copy of the novel. This is an important distinction for EL students who are in low socio-economic situations. These students rarely have English literature in their own homes. The DVD of the movie that was made from the novel is an important resource for second-language students. It provides authentic and varied English language. It shows examples of English used in real-life conversation and supports facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.
Wonder is a powerful novel that hits on all language development levels. It will improve my students’ comprehension and test-taking skills while helping them develop a lifelong love of reading, and at the same time teach social-emotional skills.
