My students will be exhibiting new work at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans. The theme for this year's exhibition is empathy. We are current focusing on portraiture inspired by the work of artist Kehinde Wiley. My lessons culminate with a series of portraits of people who the students feel gratitude towards. Portraiture is very challenging and we need these supplies in order to prepare for the upcoming exhibition. We are back in the classroom after losing an entire month of school to Hurricane Ida. As an art educator, I believe that arts education is not simply about making beautiful works of art, it can be a productive way to work through day to day the challenges we struggle with.
