As an school-based occupational therapist in Clark County School District, I support the teacher’s educational goals that are related to fine motor, visual motor, visual perceptual and self-help skills. In order to support the special education teacher, my perspective is to assess the student and determine the underlying developmental and/or physical deficient that requires remediation. I am trained to look at hand strength, hand dexterity, arm strength, sensory needs, visual perception and bilateral coordination skills. When a student has areas of weakness in any of these skill sets, he or she will require support from a school based occupational therapist such myself. Because my students are eligible for special education in a wide range of categories, some students are behind developmentally in writing goals (which require strong visual perceptual and visual motor skills). Other students have physical limitations that require strengthening activities to promote wrist movement, finger dexterity in order to reach his or her IEP goal that is supported by an occupational therapist. Other students require adaptive equipment to promote independence in writing skills. Since my students are not performing age appropriate skills due to his or qualify disability, he or she require skilled interventions from an OT to support the teachers educational goal to reach, for example, the following age appropriate developmental standard: Typical developing 7th grade students are able to spell grade-appropriate words correctly, write sentences using correct punctuation, and they are able to compose multi-paragraph essays on a given topic. My special education students need to work on the development of age appropriate skills in order to reach his or her fullest potential. Thank you very much for this opportunity to support my special education students and his or her classroom teachers as they work towards their educational goals in these unprecedented times.
