When students compare distances in space they use scientific notation. We do not have the tools currently for them to efficiently work out these problems. Imagine taking a trip to Neptune. How far away is it? How does Neptune's inertia and gravity interact to maintain a stable orbit so far out in space? These are the question types that my students will investigate. With the help of scientific calculators they will be able to master computing distances using scientific notation and apply this not only to science but to math classes as well.
