Sight words are common / frequently-used words that students should be able to instantly read and recognize (e.g., the words “and,” “the,” and “it”). For learners with low (or intermediate) reading levels, identifying these words can be a struggle. Margaret Hillert books are story-books that repeatedly use sight words, and the books’ difficulty levels are designed to be suitable for learners with low reading levels. This matters because learners with low reading levels need books that are appropriately difficult. If students are given books that are too difficult, they may struggle so much that they become discouraged from reading (and start to believe that their reading skills will never improve). The Margaret Hillert books are just the appropriate difficulty to challenge students without discouraging them. My goal is for all of my students to be at second grade reading level by the time they leave my class, and these books help by giving them confidence in their reading ability. When students feel more confident in themselves, they’re ready to accept challenges to read more difficult books, until they eventually advance to appropriate reading levels (and beyond!).
