When teaching adolescents, it is important to tap into their interests. Many of these interests include sports, gaming, and fashion. To keep my students engaged in our Algebra 1 class, I like to do themed activities such as planning our 8th grade dance through systems of equations and virtual gaming activities. The materials chosen will be used in various themed days to either decorate, facilitate or be used as a direct part of the learning process. Some lessons will be CSI themed where students will solve clues in the form of Algebra problems to find who the suspect is. The football theme will be used to build community in the class and have groups of four students work together on solving problems to get a chance to advance their football on the "field". Jenga will be used in group activities as well to have students practice skills and have an opportunity to move a block if correct. This also applies to the other games chosen. They can be tailored to content specific topics because the gaming occurs after they have answered correctly. My students have enjoyed game-like activities in the past so this is a great way to keep the students motivated and engaged. There will also be Glow and Grow Days where students will get to use neon products to complete their tasks. Ultimately, I want to use these themed lessons to keep the love of math alive in my middle schoolers.
