They have gone through so many art teachers, and when I arrived in October 2021 there was very little supplies left in the classroom. Almost all of the cabinets were bare, and there were only three posters in the room, it looks more like a Science Lab. All they had was printer paper, glue sticks, kindergarten scissors, very little paint, and printer paper. That is what we have been working with, but I would like to get some different media and new basic supplies for their age group (like I have on my list for example: Oil Pastels, & Chalk Pastels, larger scissors).
I want to be able to expand their opportunities, build confidence and help them grow and teach them there is more than one way to make Art. They are so ready to work with color but color pencils and markers get boring after a while.
I’m hoping I can open that doorway to those that aren’t that confident in sketching but will understand better with a different media that’s a little more forgiving. Hopefully this will build their confidence and they realize not all Art was meant to be perfect. As I always tell them we are not meant to be copy machines!
They tend to get overwhelmed when they have to draw something realistically. For example, this past week I had them draw a bull with as much detail as they could, we eventually got to their fourth bull with nothing but shapes. That first Bull there was a couple that enjoyed it because they understand how to draw the bull proportionally but most didn’t understand that yet. So, I want to be able to teach them the grid method using the transparency sheets as grids. I can use them year after year too.
