We will be building a robot as part of the FIRST Robotics Competition (we are FRC Team 4973). The tools and supplies you see for this project will enable us to move from decades-old tools to modern and safer options for our students to learn hands-on Engineering in a team environment. These tools will enable our students to engage with STEM hands-on: bolting the robot’s frame together, riveting an arm that will hoist the 100-pound robot off the ground, and drilling into a mechanism that will spit foam balls out the robot’s flywheel head at rapid speed. Being at a Title I school, our means are sometimes limited, but the creativity and passion of our students are unlimited. Through robotics, students gain confidence in both technical skills (e.g., learning to design a complex machine, using power tools, and explaining engineering concepts) as well as non-technical skills like leadership, communication, and teamwork.
