The project "Calm Yourself" has been created based on the increasing need for kids who have a hard time self-regulating. As an occupational therapist, I have noticed a HUGE problem with kids having a hard time handling emotions, stress, and the daily struggles of school. Everyday in the hallway I hear, "So and so is fighting" or "So and so is in trouble". Now more than ever kids are having to learn to self-regulate and are unaware of how to do that. Many times, a simple break can help a kid realize what emotion that are feeling and ways to fix their reactions. If they are having a hard time recognizing an emotion, they may need visuals like books, picture cards, or crayons and paper to help them with this process.
The goal of my project is to reduce the amount of negative behaviors that go on in my school and to increase the morale of the kids. They need to learn to understand their emotions, while using sensory based experiences to calm their bodies. The hope is give the kids a positive experience at school while also learning about their emotions.
