Nevada has put forward goals to encourage better Social Emotional Learning in the classroom. One of the SEL competencies put forward is in self-management, defined as "Handling our emotions so they facilitate rather than interfere with the task at hand." Due to my students' disabilities, many have difficulty achieving this expectation. Attention deficits and emotional disturbance is commonly found in my classroom and is a hindrance to students being able to facilitate their emotions and energy. These items will provide my students with the tools and resources they need in order to achieve the state SEL competency of self-management. Through the use of fidget toys and alternative seating, students can fidget and release excess energy so that their focus can be on the learning happening inside the classroom. The soft chair, clown punching bag, and sensory fidget tubes will be used to enhance the calm down corner in our classroom. This will be a safe place for these students to come in, use the SEL strategies we've learned, and calm down. The alternative seating such as the wobble chair and yoga ball will be used in the classroom so students have a way to release energy as they are sitting in class learning. These tools will be vital to their success in the classroom!
