My students' sensory needs are even more important that working on academic goals. These sensory items will help my students learn how to calm down when upset, overstimulated and needing a sensory break. I have witnessed my students immediately calming down from a crying meltdown by offering a break with similar items in another classroom. Having these items in our classroom, will provide us with choices for my students to make when they realize they need a break rather than after a meltdown begins. It will help my students become proactive about how they are feeling. In addition to this, these items will provide highly motivating rewards for students to begin communicating for them. This will promote communication even with nonverbal students. Once students begin communicating and self-calming, their lives dramatically change in many positive ways! These two areas are critical to living happy, productive lives!
