The items I have selected with help to create a safe and peaceful atmosphere in my office. My students come to see me for a variety of reasons. Often, they come visit me for snacks or water because they don't have food at home. I usually keep things in a fridge and/or on a shelf that they can help themselves to. I like to use soft lamps to create a calm environment. I often have students to come to me in crisis, whether it is about grades, friends, family, or other situations and they are upset. I am there to help them process what is going on and how to move forward. I have found that having something soothing to focus on, such as a lava lamp, it is easier for them to calm down and talk about how they are feeling. It is very similar to a calming jar but they don't need to shake this to get it moving. The other items will be used to prepare documents for students for scheduling classes, career exploration, college planning, etc. My office was destroyed by Hurricane Ida so I can't post a picture at this time, but I want to fix it up as soon as we can. The teenage years can be a stressful time and I want to create a space where my students feel safe and supported!
