Teachers often lose learning time to cell phones. Students get so used to depending on them for security, stimulation, and connection that when they are asked to put them away, it often causes the neurological response of "Freeze, Fight, or Flight." The ability to be cell phone-free for periods of time is not only an academic skill but also a job skill and an interpersonal skill. In order to change a behavior, it is necessary to identify the function of that behavior. So, if I want students to put their phones away, I have to figure out what could also give the student security, stimulation, or connection. If I can do that, I can substitute an alternative to the phone that is healthier and demonstrates personal respect and responsibility. I think the substitute is quality fidget toys that are not disruptive, don't look like toys, and provide stimulation. As the special education department chair, I feel like it is my responsibility to provide other teachers in our school with tools to keep their students engaged. Funding this project would allow any student in need of a fidget toy to have one that is age and setting appropriate. Each teacher in our school would have a classroom set. If a student is identified as needing this tool outside of the school setting, the student will be given the tool.
