My students begin each class with 10 minutes of independent reading time. Incorporating daily reading - with books that my students have chosen themselves - is paying dividends! My students are more engaged in the whole-class novels and dramas that we study, and they are building reading stamina, vocabulary knowledge, and most importantly a positive attitude toward reading. Some students are reading books for the first time since middle school. Continually updating my classroom library with the books my students want is key to our independent reading program. It makes a huge difference to put high-interest books right in front of my students on a daily basis. They are thrilled to see that I'm adding titles that they are requesting. On Fridays, we have book talks and they share their recommendations with others. Some titles are so frequently requested that I need multiple copies to meet their demand. Thank you for supporting the culture of reading in my classroom!
