AVID is a college preparatory course. The students will do an overall college project this year where they will learn about different fields of study, tuition, financial aid, student housing, college entrance exams, etc. Students will also listen to guest speakers, research colleges of their specific interest, and take virtual college tours. Building a miniature dorm room is a fun piece of the project that I have done with my AVID students each year. Their creativity and artistic ability is simply amazing! Over the years, I've found that not all students can afford to purchase materials to build their project. I provide what I can and ask students that are able to share materials with those that don't have any. However, that can be embarrassing for some students, so it would be better to just have a classroom supply of materials that everyone can use. The dorm project is piques their interest and motivates them to research more about colleges and universities. At the end of the overall project, students that initially had no interest in attending college end up not only wanting to attend, but knowing exactly what college they would like to attend and what they need to do in order to make it happen.
