Although our small, rural school is not like many others, our rural students were impacted by COVID just the same. Our school serves students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. I am the sole teacher for our nine students. COVID has limited our students' access to field trips and face-to-face, hands-on learning, and they are so glad to be back to school this year. We would like to gain access to the materials necessary to study, hatch, raise and analyze the growth and genetics of chicks/chickens with this opportunity for funding. This opportunity would be very exciting for all of our students from Kindergarten through middle school. Our younger students, in Kindergarten through fourth grade, would learn about inheritance and variation of traits as well as the life cycle of a chicken. They would see the differences and similarities of the chicks as they hatch and would also learn about the life cycle of a chicken, from the egg to an adult. Our middle school students, in sixth through eighth grade, would benefit so much from these supplies. They absolutely love animals and are very intrigued by them. The middle school students would be studying the growth, development, and reproduction of organisms as we study chickens and this will meet Nevada State Science Standards. Students will study factors that could affect the fertility of eggs, such as breeding conditions and plumage of the different breeds of chickens. Students will also study the genetic variations of chickens using the Punnett Square and will learn the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction. I can just imagine how exciting this will be when my students can hatch their very own purebred and hybrid breeds of chickens in my classroom after following each embryo through each developmental stage.
