As students begin to emerge from the Covid cave, I am witnessing their lack of social empathy toward themselves and others. This project is designed to open the windows of experience and allow my students to learn about their own and other's cultures while following the life of a book character. As we discuss each character, the problems they face and the reality of their lives as it connects to ours, the students will begin to understand that we are all part of a bigger world and each of us has our place. Literature brings us together by letting us walk in another's shoes and giving us the experience from the characters point of view; It gives us strength to move forward and to embrace our differences just as the characters do. Students will be able to reflect on their reading in their writing journals; documenting the personal connections they have made. These connections will then be discussed in small groups while students complete simple art projects to help ease the anxiety of public sharing. This project provides a safe place to share ideas, frustrations and fears and allows for empathy to grow as students understand that they are not so different from one another.
