The individual whiteboards, markers, and erasers that I am requesting will not only be used in class but will also fit easily into my students' backpacks and go home with them. Getting my 7th Grade Math students to "show their work" on paper was a daily struggle until I began to use a classroom set of individual whiteboards. Almost immediately, students became happy to write out their multi-step solutions to show to me, as well as other students. This practice has enabled them to increase their ability to explain their work to others, ask questions about other strategies, find errors in their solutions, as well as help students, clarify their misunderstandings about various strategies and skills. With this being the 3rd school year being impacted by COVID-19, I would love to be able to give each of my students aboard to keep in their backpacks to use at home in case they get sick or become quarantined. With these materials, those at home could continue to show their work to those at school and remain a part of our classroom community. These materials are definitely low-tech, but they are extremely effective, and giving each student their own board, marker, and eraser to use would increase their effectiveness exponentially!!
