Knowing yourself is the first step in being an empowered member of society. When people see their identities represented and celebrated by their library, they are more likely to see the library as a space for them. With that in mind, I would love the chance to update our Middle School library collection to include a variety of current anti-racist, LGBTQIA+, and BIPOC novels and authors that are more representative of our students’ interests and lives. These books and materials will help to make all students feel welcome, included, and represented in the books we have available to them and in our library space. Students will explore their own identities, and the perspectives and experiences of their peers, through the lens of realistic fiction, graphic novels, and personal narratives. With your help, our students will gain access to an inclusive and representative library collection that reflects themselves and their community.
