Like many low-income populations, the covid pandemic significantly stunted my students' social, emotional, and physical development. This indoor classroom gardening project will help them enhance their sense of independence and responsibility, strengthen their fine and gross motor skills, and engender appreciation and respect for science. Finally, this project will teach my students why and how to live sustainably. Studies show that children who participate in school gardening programs score higher on standardized tests, have increased self-esteem, and are four times more likely to eat their vegetables. With this funding, my students will learn about hydroponic systems and traditional spade to fork gardening skills. We will use these two systems to undergo a long-term scientific experiment: which approach is more sustainable? Which method is faster, produces tastier fruit, creates more work? These are just a few questions my students will answer while working in our garden. Not only will this gardening project benefit my students this school year, but it will also be the pilot program for our school. If successful, our harvests will be donated to families in need, our school cafeteria, and the greater community.
