For a large portion of the school year, 5th graders learn mathematical concepts within the Numbers & Operations in Base Ten domain. Students are introduced to powers of 10, place value, adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing decimals, and multi-digit multiplication. One strategy I use to assist students in understanding place value and lining up decimals is graphic paper. Simple? Yes, but a helpful tool to ensure students are properly performing the mathematical operation. Having student white boards with graphing lines allows me to teach in a quicker and more environmental friendly manner, reducing paper consumption. This concept applies to the reusable write & wipe pockets, allowing students to insert a worksheet and write directly on the surface. Students will be able to practice their multiplication facts in a more environmental friendly way. "Reading is a passport to countless adventures." - Mary Pope Osborne. A simple yet valuable way to improve a student's reading is by reading! Building a print-rich classroom is important to me in providing an assortment of books for students to choose from. I have a class with a range of reading abilities, some struggling and some above grade level. I have chosen all these books with my students in mind, paying attention to what they enjoy and their reading abilities.
