The materials and supplies I am requesting will assist children in gaining a voice in a variety of communication contexts including basic requesting for wants and needs, increasing length of phrases and sentences, contributing ideas and opinions, and social interactions. These skills align with and promote Nevada Academic Content Standards SL.K.1 ,SL.1.1, SL.2.1, SL.3.1, SL.4.1, SL5.1, SL.K.6, SL.1.6, SL.2.6, SL.3.6, SL.4.6, SL.5.6. The donations to this project will not only increase meaningful communication for students at school, but will lead to increased meaningful communication at home and increased student interactions within the community. During COVID restrictions my students were faced with limited communication opportunities, and many are working to regain skills for independent use of communication skills. The supplies to create durable color picture icons for nonverbal communication will provide students with communication options to be used at school and at home. The ability to quickly create, print, and laminate pictures will ensure that students have access to new item and action pictures as they increase their vocabulary, and access to sentence starters as they continue to increase their language complexity. Misplaced pictures will be quickly and easily replaced ensuring students' access to their full repertoire of communication.
